About this service
Endovascular grafting is a minimally invasive method used to treat an aortic aneurysm.
Endovascular means that the treatment is performed inside your artery using long, thin tubes called catheters that are threaded through your blood vessels.
This procedure is less invasive than an open procedure, using small incisions in your groin area through which the catheters are threaded. However, it requires more maintenance than an open procedure, and is not suitable for all patients as it depends on the shape of the aneurysm in an individual patient and its proximity to the arteries in the kidneys.
During the procedure, your surgeon will use live x-ray pictures to guide a fabric and metal tube, called an endovascular stent graft, to the site of the aneurysm. Like the graft in open surgery, the endovascular stent graft also strengthens the aorta.
Following the procedure:
- Shorter recovery time than for open surgery
- Hospital stay of two to three days
- Frequent follow-up visits with imaging procedures, such as CT scans, to ensure the graft continues to function properly
