About geriatric medicine
Geriatric medicine is a specialist medical service focused on the healthcare needs of older people. The aim of geriatric medicine is to prevent and treat diseases and improve quality of life. The service is provided by geriatricians who specialise in caring for older adults, especially those with complex medical needs. They diagnose conditions, talk to you and your loved one about care preferences and choose the best treatment path to meet each person’s individual needs.
Our service
We help older people to manage any acute and/or chronic conditions. Our goal is to enhance their overall quality of life and ensure independence for as long as possible.
- Chronic disease management: we help older adults to live better with multiple chronic conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and arthritis.
- Comprehensive geriatric assessment: to support coordinated treatment and an effective long-term care plan.
- Falls and mobility impairment support: to prevent falls, and to treat and rehabilitate patients who have had a fall.
- Polypharmacy management: we review and optimise medication schedules to avoid adverse drug interactions.

Multidisciplinary care
Our geriatric medicine service is provided by a multidisciplinary team, including a consultant geriatrician, nursing staff, physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech and language therapists, social workers and dietitians. Together they provide holistic care, focusing not just on managing medical conditions, but also improving quality of life and supporting healthy aging. Our team collaborates closely with other medical specialists within Mater Private Network, to develop a personalised care plan for each of our older patients, taking into account their full and specific needs.
Outpatient clinics
As well as inpatient care and specialty consultation services in our Eccles Street hospital, we offer outpatient geriatric clinics at 64 Eccles Street and in our Cherrywood Day Hospital. These clinics are available to people of all ages.

We understand that going to hospital can be worrying for older patients. Every member of our team treats all patients with the greatest respect, care and compassion. Below is some information that may help to answer questions you have or alleviate your concerns.
Geriatricians approach older patients holistically, and are highly experienced in the complexity of multiple conditions and potential side-effects of associated medications.
They prioritise overall physical functioning, well-being and quality of life.
Geriatricians also generally provide longer appointments to make sure that older people have enough time to discuss all of their medical concerns with their doctors.
All patients will be admitted to either a private room or a semi-private room. Our entire Mater Private Network team takes great care of our older patients, treating them with dignity and respect. We work closely with family members to ensure patients are as relaxed and comfortable as possible, and that any concerns they might have, are addressed promptly and to their satisfaction.
