Cancer Centre Research

Cancer research and clinical trials are integral for improving cancer care and treatments and therapies. Prof. Catherine Kelly, Consultant Medical Oncologist and Head of Cancer Research at Mater Private Network in Dublin, is the lead investigator of many pivotal international clinical trials in breast cancer and leads the research programme in our Cancer Centre.

The centre has over 20 years’ experience in running trials in conjunction with the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital Clinical Trials Research Unit.

A clinical trial is a type of research study that examines new tests and treatments and their effects in humans. Trials are among the final stages of many years of careful and extensive research. All standard cancer treatments were once analysed in a clinical trial.

Clinical trials can study things such as new drugs, treatments, medical devices, behavioural interventions and preventative measures.

Cancer trials test new, improved, and better ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer. For most of our cancer trials, patients either receive standard treatments for cancer or the new treatment being investigated.

What kind of trials do you carry out in Mater Private Network?

At Mater Private Network, we carry out cancer trials in partnership with the Clinical Trials Research Unit at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital. Please see their website for an up-to-date list of open and recruiting trials, further information is available here.

Most of our cancer trials involve research into new and improved drugs and radiation treatments for cancer.

I am interested in taking part in a trial, who do I contact?

If you are interested in taking part in a clinical trial, please speak to your consultant. There may not be open trials for all types of cancer and not everyone is suitable to take part in a trial.
