About our services

The gastroenterology group at Mater Private offers direct access to a dedicated consultant-led endoscopy service. 

Service features 

  • Consultant triage - referrals triaged within 24 hours 
  • Appointments - organised directly with patient within two working days  
  • Reports to referring doctor - verbal communication of urgent results and written reports sent within 24 hours 
  • Results and management plan - discussed with patient on day of procedure 
  • Urgent patients - prioritised and offered next available appointment 
  • Complex patients - seen in rooms for initial review with consultant 

Referral criteria 

Suitable patients - direct access 

  • New upper GI symptoms 
  • Suspected GI bleed (stable) 
  • Suspected malabsorption syndrome 
  • Diarrhoea 
  • Rectal bleeding 
  • Altered bowel habit 
  • Weight loss 
  • Anaemia (iron deficiency) 
  • Family history/screening 

Complex patients - rooms consultation 

  • Significant co-morbidities (diabetes, blood thinners, uncontrolled ccf, severe renal disease) 
  • Haemodynamically unstable patients 
  • Aged under 16 
  • Not fit for day-case procedure 
  • Not fit for at home bowel prep
