About
Education & Experience
Dr. Niamh Keenan is a Consultant Cardiothoracic Surgeon at Mater Private Network in Cork and Dublin. Dr. Keenan graduated with honours from University College Dublin in 2004. Having completed basic surgical training and early cardiothoracic training in Ireland, she completed her higher specialist training in cardiothoracic surgery in Australia. She pursued a fellowship in mitral valve surgery in Papworth Hospital, Cambridge, and following this, returned to Ireland taking a consultant cardiothoracic surgical position in St. James’s Hospital, Dublin from 2019-2021, before joining Mater Private Network in 2022.
Special Interests
Dr. Keenan special interests include arterial revascularisation, and valvular heart disease. During her time in Australia, she worked in the Royal Melbourne Hospital, a world leader in arterial revascularisation, and in Flinders Medical Centre, Adelaide, a tertiary referral centre for complex rheumatic heart disease.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Dr. Keenan was awarded an MD from RCSI in 2009 for her research on the systemic inflammatory response post cardiac surgery.
She has a strong interest in surgical education and is currently a Senior Lecturer in RCSI, where she teaches operative skills and human factors to surgical trainees, predominantly through simulation.
