About
Education & Experience
Mr. O’Brien graduated with honours from UCC in 1999.
He trained in both general surgery and vascular surgery with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland.
After completing higher surgical training in 2010, he was awarded the RCSI Travelling Fellowship Award and travelled to work at the prestigious Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney, specialising for three years in minimally invasive (or endovascular) surgery.
Special Interests
Mr. O’Brien is a vascular surgeon who specialises in minimally-invasive endovascular treatments.
Mr. O’Brien strives to treat vascular conditions (aneurysms, peripheral vascular disease, carotid disease, varicose veins) with keyhole techniques so patients benefit from less pain and faster recovery with no compromise on outcomes.
He also specialises in cosmetic vein procedures such as foam sclerotherapy, micro-sclerotherapy as well as radiofrequency and laser treatments for cosmetic varicose veins, spider veins and thread veins.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Mr. O’Brien was awarded an M.D. in 2005 by UCC for surgical research.
His research won three national and three international prizes, including the prestigious RCSI President’s Medal for surgical research in 2006.
He has delivered numerous international research presentations and has over twenty surgical publications in peer reviewed journals. He has written book chapters for vascular surgical textbooks.
He delivers undergraduate surgical teaching to UCC and is a vascular surgical trainer for postgraduate surgical training for RCSI.
