Experience & Education
Dr. Shane O’Hanlon is a Consultant Geriatrician who practises exclusively at Mater Private Network in Dublin. He trained in Ireland and the UK, gaining broad experience in all areas of geriatric medicine in a variety of clinical settings. He completed a fellowship in Perioperative Medicine at King’s College Hospital in London and was appointed Consultant Geriatrician at the Royal Berkshire Hospital in 2014. He was a Consultant Geriatrician at St. Vincent’s University Hospital and St. Columcille’s Hospital Loughlinstown for several years, before joining Mater Private Network in 2024.
Dr. O’Hanlon holds a Diploma in Geriatric Medicine, a Certificate in Palliative Care, a PGCert in Patient Safety, a Certificate in Human Rights, a Masters in Healthcare Informatics, and a First Class Honours Degree in Law.
Services
Dr. O’Hanlon provides expertise on all aspects of healthy ageing, with the aim of improving quality of life and longevity. He runs specialty outpatient clinics in Mater Private at 64 Eccles Street and Cherrywood Day Hospital, and offers inpatient care and specialty consultation services at Mater Private Hospital on Eccles Street. These services are available to patients of all ages (no cut-off).
Special Interests
Dr. O'Hanlon's special interests include memory and cognition, falls and bone health, prehabilitation, pre-operative assessment, rehabilitation and recovery after illness or surgery, geriatric oncology, legal issues and capacity assessment, frailty, stroke medicine, healthy ageing, and healthspan and longevity.
Clinical Research and Professional Memberships
Dr. O’Hanlon is Clinical Professor in UCD and Principal Investigator at UCD for the 5.9 million euro GerOnTe project, funded by the European Commission Horizon 2020 programme. He has contributed book chapters to the respected Oxford Textbook of Geriatric Medicine and Brocklehurst’s Geriatric Medicine. He served as Editor for the international textbook A Comprehensive Guide to Rehabilitation of the Older Patient and the charity anthology Emergence – a celebration of the wisdom and resilience of ageing. He has published over 100 scientific papers and abstracts, and has served as a PhD supervisor and examiner. He is Associate Editor for Age and Ageing journal.
Dr. O’Hanlon was elected Honorary Deputy Secretary of the British Geriatrics Society in 2015 and served as Honorary Secretary until 2018. He is a Member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and has also been a member of the Full Board of the European Geriatric Medicine Society, a member of the executive of the Irish Society of Physicians in Geriatric Medicine, and a panel member for the European Association of Urology Prostate Cancer Guidelines.
