Education & Experience
Dr. Richard Tanner is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network, Cork.
Dr. Tanner graduated from University College Cork with an honours degree in May 2013. He completed basic specialist training In medicine at the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital (MMUH) in Dublin, and was awarded Membership of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (MRCPI MD) in 2016. He subsequently undertook cardiology higher specialist training at Letterkenny University Hospital, St. James’s Hospital, Cork University Hospital and MMUH. For the last three years of cardiology training (2021-2024), he undertook an interventional cardiology fellowship at Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, a complex and high-risk coronary intervention (CHIP) fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York, and a structural heart disease fellowship at Mount Sinai Hospital, New York. Dr. Tanner completed a higher-level research degree, a Doctor of Medicine (MD), at University College Dublin in 2024. He joined Mater Private Network as a Consultant Cardiologist in September 2024.
Special Interests
Dr. Tanner’s special interests include primary prevention through optimisation of risk factors for heart disease and lifestyle modification, and coronary artery disease management through medical and invasive therapy (coronary angioplasty). He subspecialises in structural heart disease, particularly valvular heart disease, namely transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), MitraClip, and TriClip. He also performs patent foramen ovale (PFO) closure, atrial septal defects (ASD) closure, and left atrial appendage occlusion.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Dr. Tanner has published more than 30 peer-reviewed manuscripts across a variety of medical journals, including the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, the Journal of the American Heart Association, and the Journal of Heart & Lung Transplantation. In 2022, he was a finalist in the Brian Maurer Young Investigator Award at the Irish Cardiac Society's annual scientific meeting. He completed his Doctor of Medicine (MD) higher research degree through University College Dublin in 2024. This research focused on clinical studies in transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI).
Dr. Tanner is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the Irish Cardiac Society. In 2024, he participated as a faculty at the Cardiovascular Research Foundation (CRF), New York Valves conference.
