Dr. John P. Foran

Dr. John P. Foran is a highly experienced consultant interventional cardiologist, who specialises in interventional cardiology (including coronary angioplasty/stent implantation), the management of heart rate and rhythm disorders (including catheter ablation and pacemaker/device implantation), and structural heart disease (including left atrial appendage and patent foramen ovale closure).

Education & Experience

Graduating from St George’s Hospital (University of London) in 1988, Dr. Foran subsequently trained in both adult and paediatric cardiology at various UK cardiothoracic units including St George’s, the Brook, King’s College, Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, and the Manchester Heart Centre.

After performing his first coronary angiogram in 1989, and his first angioplasty procedure in 1990, pacemaker and ICD implantation followed in 1990, and radiofrequency catheter ablation in 1991.  Dr. Foran now has more than 30 years of experience in percutaneous coronary intervention, device implantation and catheter ablation.

In 2003, Dr. Foran pioneered LA appendage occlusion – a key-hole interventional technique used for stroke prevention in patients with high-risk atrial fibrillation – in England, and he now has 20 years of experience in this field. His strong commitment to education, teaching and research is expressed nationally and internationally through speaking engagements, faculty invitations, clinician proctoring and workshop participation.  

In 2025 Dr. Foran joined Mater Private Network in Cork as a Consultant Interventional Cardiologist and Clinical Lead / Head of Department of Cardiology. 

Specialist Interests 

Dr. Foran’s academic research is clinically orientated and focuses on new and emerging therapies to prevent embolic and haemorrhagic stroke in high-risk patients with atrial fibrillation, interventional techniques to improve patient outcomes following percutaneous coronary stent implantation, and emerging interventional treatments for patients with resistant hypertension.

Risk factor management (high cholesterol, hypertension, diabetes, smoking, obesity). Heart rate and rhythm disorders. Atrial fibrillation, atrial flutter, atrial tachycardia.
