Education & Experience
Dr. JJ Coughlan is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network, Dublin.
Dr. Coughlan graduated from Trinity College Dublin with an honour’s degree in Medicine. After completing higher specialist training in Cardiology in Ireland, he undertook a research and clinical fellowship in interventional cardiology in the ISAResearch Centre and German Heart Centre in Munich, Germany. He was awarded his Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training (CCST) in Cardiology by the Royal College of Physicians in Ireland (RCPI) and his higher-level research degree, a medical doctorate (MD), by the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI). He joined Mater Private Network in Dublin as a Consultant Cardiologist in 2024.
Special Interests
Dr. Coughlan has a specialist interest in the management of patients with coronary artery disease. He is particularly interested in the management of patients with acute coronary syndromes and the assessment of patients with chest pain. He performs diagnostic and interventional procedures in the cardiac catheterisation laboratory. He is also interested in the assessment and optimisation of cardiovascular risk. This includes the assessment of patients who have a family history of heart attacks, coronary stenting or coronary artery bypass surgery.
Clinical Research & Professional Memberships
Dr. Coughlan’s research interests include antithrombotic strategies for patients with acute coronary syndromes and optimisation of clinical outcomes after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI). He has published over 75 PubMed indexed scientific articles to date, including first author publications in high impact journals such as Circulation and JAMA Cardiology. For his research in Munich, which focused on antithrombotic strategies for patients with acute coronary syndromes, he was awarded a doctoral degree by RCSI. He has also been involved in working with the European Society of Cardiology (ESC) and was an author and task force co-ordinator for the 2023 ESC guidelines on the management of patients with acute coronary syndromes. He has authored several book chapters in leading reference interventional cardiology textbooks, including Cardiovascular Intervention: A Companion to Braunwald’s Heart Disease, and the PCR-EAPCI Percutaneous Interventional Cardiovascular Medicine Textbook.
He has received several awards in his career to date, including an EAPCI Interventional Cardiology Education and Training Grant. At the end of his higher specialist training in the RCPI, he was also chosen as the 2022 Eliza Dunbar Lecturer by the Institute of Medicine, where he delivered a lecture on his research regarding clinical outcomes in women with coronary artery disease. He remains actively involved in clinical research in Dublin, working with both the Cardiovascular Research Institute (CVRI) and RCSI.
