About

Education and experience

Dr. Gearóid Fitzgerald is a Consultant Cardiologist at Mater Private Network in Cork.

He graduated from University College Cork in 2014 with an Honours degree in Medicine and completed Basic Specialist Training in the Munster region from 2015 - 2017. During this time, he completed his medical membership examinations (MRCPI). Prior to embarking on a career in medicine, Dr. Fitzgerald completed a B. Sc. in Pharmacy (2008). He completed his Higher Specialist Training in Cardiology working in University Hospital Limerick, Cork University Hospital, St. Vincent’s University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital. During this time, he completed the European Exam in Core Cardiology, as well as Postgraduate Certificates in Health Economics and Policy (London School of Economics) and Human Factors in Healthcare. During his training, Dr. Fitzgerald has been actively involved in research; publishing and presenting on coronary artery disease and coronary intervention nationally and internationally.  He has acted as co-investigator on a number of trials in both Ireland and Scotland.

Following this, Dr. Fitzgerald embarked on sub-speciality training in coronary intervention in Beaumont Hospital, Dublin and Mater Private Network, Dublin. In 2023, he was awarded the Dr. Brian McGovern scholarship by the Irish Cardiac Society to pursue advanced training in complex intervention in Golden Jubilee National Hospital, Glasgow, Scotland. GJNH is the largest volume PCI (angioplasty) centre in the UK with a wealth of expertise in coronary intervention and imaging. Prior to his appointment to Mater Private Cork, he was a Consultant Cardiologist in the Mater Misericordiae Hospital, Dublin. 

Dr. Fitzgerald currently works in the Mercy University hospital and Mater Private Network in Cork. 

Special Interests

Dr. Fitzgerald’s specialist area includes all aspects of interventional cardiology, particularly PCI (angioplasty), coronary physiology and pharmacology, intra-coronary imaging and chronic total occlusion treatment.
