Education & Experience
Dr. Donal Sheehan is a Consultant Gastroenterologist at Mater Private Network, Cork
Dr. Sheehan graduated from University College Cork in 2008 with an honours degree in Medicine. He did the RCPI Basic Specialist Training in Cork and subsequently completed Higher Specialist Training in Gastroenterology, training in Cork University Hospital, St. Vincent’s University Hospital and the Mater Misericordiae University Hospital, Dublin. Following this he completed two fellowships in gastroenterology: the first as a Senior Clinical Fellow in Oxford University Hospital and then as a Specialist Endoscopy Fellow in the Wolfson Endoscopy Unit, St. Mark’s Hospital, London. During these fellowships Dr. Sheehan received advanced training in Inflammatory Bowel disease, therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic resection techniques. He was appointed as a Consultant Gastroenterologist in Mercy University Hospital, Cork in 2022 and the Mater Private Network, Cork in 2024.
He is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland (RCPI), Irish Society of Gastroenterology (ISG), European Crohn’s & Colitis Organisation (ECCO) and European Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (ESGE).
Special Interests
Dr. Sheehan’s special interests are in endoscopy and Inflammatory Bowel disease. From an endoscopy perspective this includes diagnostic upper GI endoscopy and colonoscopy, colonic polyps, endoscopic resection of polyps, endoscopic surveillance of patients with polyposis syndromes and patients with a family history of colorectal cancer.
