Education & Experience
Dr. Ciarán McDonald is a Consultant Gastroenterologist and Interventional Endoscopist currently working at both Mater Private Network and Mercy University Hospital in Cork.
Dr. McDonald obtained his medical degree from University College Cork in 2011. Having completed Basic Specialist Training in the Cork/Kerry hospital group, Dr. McDonald went on to complete Higher Specialist Training (HST) in Gastroenterology in high volume centres including Cork University Hospital, St James’s Hospital, Beaumont Hospital and Mercy University Hospital. He obtained CSCST and has been on the Specialist Gastroenterology Registrar since 2023.
During his HST training, Dr. McDonald also completed and obtained a first class honours masters degree in Medical Professionals Education from University College Cork in 2022. His dissertation focused on endoscopy training from a qualitative perspective via the trainee/ trainer relationship and the factors that impact on this relationship. He was also a clinical lecturer and tutor with both the Royal College of Surgeons (RCSI) University of Medicine and Health Sciences and University College Cork for undergraduate medical students while a gastroenterology specialist registrar.
Following his HST, Dr. McDonald completed his fellowship in advanced interventional endoscopy in Vancouver, Canada in 2023. This interventional fellowship focused on complex endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and endoscopic ultrasound (EUS) as well as third space endoscopy, endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) and peroral endoscopic myotomy (POEM) in Vancouver General and St. Paul’s Hospitals.
Special Interests
Dr. McDonald has a wide range of general gastroenterology experience including irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) and hepatology. He is published in peer reviewed journals in the areas of interventional endoscopy and IBD.
