What is constipation?
Constipation is persistent, infrequent bowel movements or difficult passage of stool. Whilst it is normal to experience occasional constipation, chronic constipation can have negative impact on a person’s lifestyle.
What are the causes of constipation?
Chronic constipation may be caused by:
- Bowel obstruction
- Anal fissure
- Narrowing of the colon
- Colon cancer
- Rectocele
- Muscle/nerve damage as well as hormonal imbalances
- Lifestyle and diet
What are the risk factors?
Factors that may increase the risk of chronic constipation include:
- Age
- Being a woman
- Having a low fibre diet
- Dehydration
- Low physical activity
- Having mental illnesses and/or eating disorders
- Taking certain medication
- Particularly pain killers (sedatives, narcotics, blood pressure medication and others)
