About

Education & Experience

Dr. Andrew Purcell is a Pain Management Consultant at Mater Private Network in Cork. 

Dr. Purcell is a UCD medical graduate. He also holds a BSc (Pharmacy) and MA (Dubl.) qualification from Trinity College Dublin. Prior to qualifying as a medical doctor, he worked as a clinical pharmacist in Ireland and the UK.

He completed his anaesthesiology, critical care, and pain medicine specialist training with the College of Anaesthesiologists of Ireland (CAI). He is registered on the specialist division for Anaesthesiology with the Medical Council of Ireland.

Dr. Purcell has completed further advanced specialist training in pain medicine with the Faculty of Pain Medicine, CAI. He holds a Diploma in Pain Management (2021) and was awarded fellowship status having placed 1st in the FFPMCAI examinations in 2022. He completed his pain medicine fellowship training in Dublin, Ireland, during which time he trained in Tallaght University Hospital, St. Vincent’s University Hospital and Beaumont Hospital.

Dr. Purcell was appointed as a Consultant in Anaesthesiology and Pain Medicine in South Infirmary Victoria University Hospital, Cork, in 2022.

Special Interests

Dr. Purcell is a fellowship-trained specialist in interventional pain management techniques. He is an expert in both fluoroscopic (X-ray) and ultrasound guided procedures for chronic pain management.

Dr. Purcell provides interventional treatments as part of a multidisciplinary, holistic approach to chronic pain conditions including chronic musculoskeletal pain (in particular, spinal pain), chronic neuropathic pain, chronic post-surgical pain, chronic cancer pain, chronic visceral pain and chronic orofacial/headache pain.

Dr. Purcell is unique as a consultant in the field of chronic pain medicine in Ireland given his clinical pharmacy background. This has given him a particular interest in rationalising drug therapies in those with chronic pain conditions. Dr. Purcell is passionate about opioid related harm-reduction in relation to chronic pain and has presented both nationally and internationally on the subject.
