Cancer Care Team: Emer Hannigan - CNM2 Gynaecology Oncology
Emer Hannigan is a Clinical Nurse Manager 2 (CNM 2) working in Gynaecological Oncology. She graduated as a general nurse from University College Dublin in 2007 and discovered her passion for oncology while working in an oncology ward during her student years. After qualifying, she was certain she wanted to pursue a career in oncology and spent eight years working at Mater Public Hospital. She then supported cancer patients and their families through her roles at the Irish Cancer Society’s helpline and the Daffodil Centre. In 2021, she joined Mater Private Network, where she now works closely with patients with gynaecological cancers.
What does a day in your life look like?
I usually start my day by visiting patients who are currently staying in the hospital following their surgery. During these visits, I help patients understand how to care for themselves after surgery and provide emotional support when needed. I also review the next steps in their treatment plan, including recovery, follow-up appointments and any further treatment like chemotherapy and radiotherapy, so they feel more prepared for what’s ahead.
Within our Cancer Centre, we hold multidisciplinary meetings with oncologists, pathologists, and radiologists, to discuss each patient’s case and decide on the next steps in their treatment. Before each meeting, I ensure all the necessary information, including scans and pathology reports, is ready, so the consultants have a complete view of each patient’s case.
After discharge, I stay in touch and provide my phone number for any questions or support during recovery. I’m always available to help.
I also assist in clinics when patients are first referred by their GP, helping newly diagnosed patients understand their diagnosis and treatment options. With many years of experience, I understand how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis can be. I ensure patients have all the information and support they need to feel more in control of their health.
My support continues even after patients complete their treatment. I see them during their follow-up appointments, typically every three to six months. Being involved in every step of their care, helps me build strong, lasting relationships with them. This provides patients with the assurance that they have support when they need help or advice, regardless their concerns.
What other teams do you collaborate with?
I work closely with a wide range of specialists, including oncologists, physiotherapists, and dietitians. Cancer and its treatments can affect patients’ appetite and ability to eat, particularly if they experience bowel issues after treatment. Our dietitians are excellent at creating personalised meal plans to meet each patient’s specific nutritional needs.
Physiotherapists play a crucial role in our team, helping patients with gynaecological cancers to strengthen their pelvic floor. These exercises are essential before and after surgery to prevent complications like prolapse and aid recovery.
What do you like most about your role?
What I love most about my role at Mater Private Network is the opportunity to work with an incredible team of professionals and build meaningful relationships with my patients. Being involved in their care from the time of diagnosis until recovery allows me to connect with them in a deep and personal way. Knowing that I’ve had positive impact on someone’s life, especially during such a difficult time, is incredibly rewarding.
